Hmmm...I can understand that. I buy cars to get me from point A to point B. Maintenance and safety are my most important items to consider.
Other items include fuel efficiency and style is dead last.
I think it all goes down to personal preference. I've had Japanese cars for a long time now (Honda Accord, Lexus RX300, Acura TL) as has my wife (Acura Integra and now Acura MDX).
I'm just looking for a change now and would love to have something European.
As for BMW/Mercedes, I feel the same about them as you do about Audis. Bleh.
And, getting an A4 or A5 would definitely not be a step down from a TL.

Why would anyone want to get anything but an Acura TL?
....
As for Audi, bah...save your money and get a BMW/Mercedes---this way if you want to resell (and you will due to the unreliable electronics), you'll be able to recoup more of your money.
Just curious, but why do you want to change? IMHO, you should never go 'down' in the car category unless it gives you a significantly superior experience (like the prius for me). My 2 cents worth.
