I hope that the people that know what they are talking about come here and give you some actual mac help. But I don't know if there is agreement on the router recommendation. I bought an airport extreme last year though to upgrade my old original base station. I decided I didn't want to have to deal with configuring and updating and maintaining a 3rd party router. I like being able to configure it using my ipad. whether that would be worth the money for you is not at all clear, since other 3rd party routers can do similar things for less.
But I would suggest you think about extending your network. You may have trouble with any setup getting the range you need. So having the option to add something like an airport express to easily extend the network (in either apartment) would be nice. Again, that is avail in a 3rd party option; again for me, I can't stand configuring anything that smells like a windows set up wifi utility (I do connect one windows computer with wifi adapter, and so do have to periodically deal with that). I have this naive belief that if I wanted more range I could pick up a refurb express and plug that in and have it running in minutes.
