Report: Calif. nitrate contamination spreading

A desert is 'designed' by nature to hold water as much as possible in the soil. When you irrigate a desert, it will also hold the stuff the water carries. Not a surprise. 'Groundwater" is a polite way of saying 'runoff and seepage' from irrigated areas.

There are always unforseen results when one pulls too much water out of the ground or artificially adds water to a watershed.
