My experience is worse. I bought a Brother laser (5150?) for moderate office use and not only did the thing go through toner and drums at a terrific rate, but began malfunctioning, finally ending up in a cloud of smoke.
I also have a brother MFC 440 inkjet, which I use mostly as a fax machine, and for the occasional color print. Bought a pile of ink cartridges for it (it uses ink quickly), but the blue-ink head stopped working altogether, which means it is useless as a color printer. Works OK as a fax machine, but the paper tray is almost impossible to get out without fear of breaking. Fortunately, most of my incoming faxes come to the computer.
True, the newer HPs aren't as robust as the old workhorses (I still have a LJ 4MP still going, and a 4000 series, too). But I replaced the smoking Brother with a smaller HP (P2110?) and it's been working fine.
In my experience, HP +4 or so; Brother -2. I won't buy another Brother. HP knows how to make printers.
