You're never too old to learn to swim! Go for it...
I used to teach swimming at the local pond and the adult class was the easiest to teach because they were highly motivated (unlike the kids who "had to") Most of them were moms that wanted to keep up with the kids.
It does help to have an instructor that's used to teaching adults - different way of learning than kids plus there are the fears we have as adults that you don't have as a kid.
Plus it's a great way to stay fit without pounding any joints.
