Photo Stream sharing is insecure: Rant

Last night my wife shared a photo stream with me, but not to my iCloud account but rather another email I frequently use. Almost immediately it was accepted... but by my mom. How did my mom get the photo stream invite when it was shared privately with my email address? I set up her new iPhone5 last week. Used her email as her Apple ID and then realized during set up that if I wanted to back up to iCloudI'd have to create her an iCloud account as well. So those 2 addresses are the only things in the iCloud settings, Mail Contacts and Calendars, and Messages settings. And same thing for my phone, none of her info is in my phone.

Could you expand on this some more and maybe provide the answer to your own question, since this seems to be the key to the whole puzzle.

"How did my mom get the photo stream invite when it was shared privately with my email address?"

So, how did your Mom get the invite? Was it on the iPhone? Was it an email? If so, what was the "To:" address in the email? Ignoring iCloud, what are the Mail Account settings on your Mom's iPhone (assuming that is where she got the invite). Did you happen to setup an account there at one time to check your own email?
The way she actually received the notification was through Photos.app on the iPhone. My question was more to the point how did Apple allow this to happen since there is no way this should have happened. And I addressed all the other points you bring up, no where on her phone has any of my account information been entered except at the point it asked me to set up an emergency recovery email address. I've gone through her phone and verified all the settings and Apple had me reverify twice. I haven't ever set up an account there, this is her first iPhone and I just set it up a week or so ago.
