help: mail app acts like new install after kernel panic and can't get old mail

You can try this:

Move the folder Library/Mail and the file Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist in your home folder to your Desktop. Launch Mail and set it up as if for the first time. You should then be able to import your old mailboxes (File > Import Mailboxes…)
