The lug nuts do not have to be very loose, just a little loose. I think lug nut threads are 12 tpi so three turns loose is about a quarter of an inch of slack, maybe a little more would be OK. Once the wheel moves a little, the rust is broken and it will slide right off the lugs when the car is jacked back up.
