Help! Partition Failed! I wanted to repartition my backup drive…
#3
Hi Gene,
In the alert, the words "Couldn't unmount disk." mean that some app, somewhere, has accessed the disk (or one of its partitions (if more than one partition), or the partition). Has the disk been removed from the backup utility's use? I don't recall which you use: Time Machine, perhaps, or Carbon Copy Cloner (or both), or something else.

In a new Finder window, see if you can 'Eject' the volume that is the backup drive.
If the Finder says the volume is in use, then you have to locate the guilty party.

Sometimes, that's the Finder itself, if you have the volume displayed in a Finder window; a browser or editor pointing at a file on the volume would also prevent unmounting.

Good luck,
