The poor bear has to be put down as well. Now THAT is a tragedy.
... that description of a bear "Whuffing" has shivers running down my spine from a similar memory of Yellowstone in the 1960's... we heard that from inside our tent one night. Dad calmly instructed us all to lie very, very still. Mr. Bear finished up scaring off whichever idiot surprised him while he was shopping for snacks, and moseyed off. They closed the campground that morning due to Bear Activity.
Not to protect the stupid hoomans, but to protect the bears.
