The problem is that most of the generic versions out there are from one or two suppliers in china/hong kong. If you get a working generic version that last for more than a month, consider yourself lucky.
Came across this dilema after purchasing my iPhone 5. Looking for generics on ebay and Amazon. Out of the three that I purchases from ebay and Amazon. Two of them fit well and the third fit tight on the connector. Two of the three came apart within a week and luckly the sellers replaced them, after two of the three came apart again, I superglued the head.
I am currently using a 6ft black version of monoprice's USB to 8pin adapter. These have held up pretty well and have the same tip as the original apple cable( most of the generics have a seam).
