iphone 5 adapter, 30pin to 8pin

I ordered an adapter and a 8-pin USB cable combo from Amazon for $11. The adapter only supports charging and no audio. When I attempt to charge the iPhone with the cable, my iPhone reads "charging not supported with this device" or something like that.
Amazon has an authorized Lighting cable that works for everything... A USB cable, not a 30-pin adapter. It's Amazon-branded.
