Yeah, but it matters. A used bookstore, pre-owned textbooks, a lending library, the list goes on.

It's not a small thing.
The difference is that the book can't be duplicated and in two places at once. The electronic version can be duplicated.

If you wanted to treat downloaded media truely like physical media you would have to delete the original as you made the copy to loan out. The problem is, there is no way to do that.
