I don't know or care about all of the useful things that keychain might be doing for me in the background, but I agree with Spiff. I know all the passwords for my important stuff, and I'd rather use the "forgot password" functions for stuff I don't need to access frequently. For example, I had to create a login to post this. I may never look at this site again. I don't need or want keychain storing my password for this site.
If someone gets onto my computer, I don't want that meaning they have carte blanche access to everything on my keychain, like my email, my work website login, my bank login, etc.
What I want to turn off is the default setting that makes it keep assuming I want it to store passwords. I don't want to have to stay constantly vigilant, remembering to uncheck that box every time I log in to something (and also have to regularly go in there and erase my passwords out of keychain when I accidentally forget to uncheck the box).
I had managed to fix this on my old computer, but I just got a new one, complete with frustrating changes to get used to, and one of them is the fact that keychain is back to defaulting with the "save password" box checked. I realize I'm responding to this thread significantly after the original posting, but I hope someone can help me. I'm now on OS 10.8.4.
