Spoiled? No. If you're getting less than 15/1 then you're actually not getting a standard package. You're stepping down to a more basic package that is slower than the one people normally order when they get cable modem service.
15/5 is the standard for cable modem speeds for Optimum Online from Cablevision. I wasn't able to find a slower level of service on their site. It may exist but if it does, it likely a special request.
The standard speed for Timewarner in the five boroughs is 15/1. If your speeds are lower than 15/1 then it isn't standard Timewarner access. You've dropped a level or two to their basic or lite package.
Standard service from Comcast is 20 down. I can't find the upload speed. Their Performance Starter - a step slower is 6 down. I suspect the average subscriber doesn't go for Performance Starter.
FWIW, I had 15/5 Optimum Online in my old apartment and it got the job done. My office has 15/5 and it gets the job done. However, in our old place, my wife and I switched to FIOS when it became available and our package included 25/25. It was a noticeable improvement, especially for streaming video.
In our new place has 50/25. The difference is tangible, just as it was when we moved from 15/5 to 25/5. But, it's _very_ noticeable when comparing the speed at home and the speed at the office. I wouldn't choose 15/5 now, though. I'd spend the extra bucks for at least 25/25 (or 25/15). If that wasn't the option, I'd definitely go for at least 50/25.
One of the reasons I want the faster speeds on both the download and the upload is because I have encrypted backups being sent from various locations to the server in my apartment.. Same goes for backups being sent from my apartment to other locations. This alone makes it worth the extra bucks for faster access.
