Deck,
Did you rinse the blade head regularly while shaving? I'm not talking dipping the head of the razor into a bowl of water and swishing it. I mean having the water running and swishing it under the faucet. I found this was the only way to clean the heads of a cartridge razor. 'course, I also found the Sensor Excel cartridges resulted in an inferior shave to the plain ol' original Sensor cartridges and neither was as good as the Sensor3 cartridges. That and I've yet to find a foam that can compete with a quality shave cream. Even gels don't do the job as well.
There are a slew of threads about shaving and shaving with an ol' fashioned double-edge razor. Definitely worth a read. Although I've always used a quality shave cream, I switched to a DE razor many months ago and haven't looked back. My initial DE razor is a cheap model I bought from Amazon.com. It was quickly replaced with a nice Edwin Jagger Barleycorn razor. Although I get a very nice, close baby-bottom shave with both, the difference in build quality is dramatic. The Edwin Jagger Barleycorn is a much nicer razor.
