Well, see, that all depends on the next Mac. Many current Macs don't use 2.5" drives. You could do external, but who needs an external 120GB drive?
120 GB SSDs make great external boot drives -- especially via USB 3.
This hypothetical new Mac, that apparently won't exist for the OP anyway, will likely already have an internal SSD preinstalled. External boot SSD is likely less important for most people with a system already booting from an internal SSD.
