List of More than 100 Desperate Towns Ravaged by Yolanda / Haiyan — And This is Incomplete
By Michael D. Sellers On November 12, 2013 ·
Just how big is the problem in the Philippines? How big is the need? Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) raked a huge swath across the center of the country. Tacloban was the biggest population center and was hit very hard and it is getting 90% of the attention in the international media, so much so that it threatens to obscure the true scope of the devastation. This is not about one city. Tacloban is the beginning of the story. It’s not the story. All throughout the region there are towns and villages and all around the world there are Filipinos desperate for news about their missing relatives. And in the towns, those relatives are desperate for assistance which has not arrived.
The Philippine Star has started making an effort to catalogue the population centers that are affected, starting with those for whom there are relatives who have written to the Star saying no aid as arrived. That preliminary list:
Samar
Santa Rita
Salcedo
Basey
Marabut
Giporlos
Hernani
Guiuan
Llorente
Catbalogan
San Policarpio
Borongan
Lawaan
Taft
Balangkayan
