Yup: rat snake. All the rat snake babies look pretty much alike, although corn snakes are more red/orange.
I know when you're flustered it might not be practical to look for details, but in North America if you can see the snake's eye and the pupil is round, it's non-venomous. Rattlers, copperheads, and cottonmouths are all vipers and have vertical pupils like a cat. Except for the coral snake, but your chances of seeing one of those guys is pretty slime. Then remember the rhyme! "Red touch yellow, kill a fellow. Red touch black, friend to Jack."
