those are all good questions. The school's security guard who responded was unarmed. The sheriff's deputy happened to be there too but as I understand is not full time at the school.
I still come around to : why did he have a gun to begin with? Yes he had other "weapons" but the only one that hurt anyone was the shotgun.
he bought the gun legally by himself just a few days before the shooting. Colorado law allows 18 year olds to buy shotguns but not handguns. He had just recently been disciplined for threatening a teacher, and the school says it notified law enforcement, but it's not clear what happened after that. One thing that clearly did not happen is that put out any kind of notice to gun shops not to sell this kid a gun.
And that one simple thing could have prevented all of this violence.
