That's actually what Sodastream machines do. They make carbonated water. Flavorings and such are added after the water is carbonated. I'd by a few bottles of seltzer from the local supermarket before investing in a SodaStream system. Seltzer from one company or another is always on sale and can be had dirt cheap.
If you truly drink a lot of it, then it may make sense to invest in the machine. There are people in the forum who have Sodastream machines and are happy with them. But, I remember seeing a thread where a member had a problem with one. I think a bottle went kablooey in the carbonation process or something along those lines. Definitely search the forum about it.
