I do have ATT (barely, it's so slow...) and the 2Wire they sold me. The modem tries hooking up, DSL light goes green and the nothing with power light flashing red. It sometime clicks when the lights switch. (edit) And, of course, it sometimes works for hours without problem. Intermittent problems suck...
The lineman who came out and checked said that red power light is always a red flag for a bad modem. And, modems are not supposed to click. He said sometimes the power transformer can go bad too. He also said that when they first started installing DSL, everyone was quite surprised at how many modems go bad.
Thanks for the offer, N-OS X-tasy! I might take you up, let me know if I can paypal you some dollars.
Thanks all!

My 2Wire Gateway also clicks when it boots up or if you reset it and it has been that way since day 1. These Gateway's have a reputation of the power supply (power brick) failing, mine did, I needed a new one quickly so I bought a universal one from Radio Shack, but you can get a replacement from AT&T for less. Also from what I can gather from researching it on the internet they are quite flakey, mine frequently drops it's internet connection but other times will stay connected without issue. Apparently with Uverse AT&T now uses a newer version that's made by Pace (the company bought out 2Wire or something) and they're not any more reliable than the older 2Wire Gateways.
