I'm a live trap kind of person, I'm not into killing creatures unless I absolutely have to. Call your states extension service and ask them for advice, they would know whether live trapping will work and how far away they critters need to be let go for them not to find you again.
If I have to kill, I'll do the quickest execution method that there is, for mice it's whacking them. I really don't like poisoning, I don't want to think how they are suffering while their insides melt and they bleed out. Drowning seems pretty cruel as well, and getting their drowned carcasses out of the water is no fun. I guess for groundhogs I'd opt to shoot them if needed, it's a fairly quick, non-suffering death.
