I have two suggestions.
First, with your current progressives. take them off. After resting your eyes, put them on and find something to do at a fixed distance-- reading a *book* or watching TV, for instance.
Find a portion of the lenses that works for that distance and try not to move your head. Just keep watching through one portion of the lenses, minimizing if not eliminating the "swim" effect. When you need to move your head, or move at all, take the glasses off. Don't try to use any other portion of the lens.
From time to time vary the distance, finding the proper portion of the lens,, and stick with that. Moving between TV and reading for instance. (The latter would require suffering through commercials.
Then, if that doesn't work to reduce headaches and promote acclimation, get either bifocals or two pair of single vision glasses. Wait a week or two before trying to use the bifocals, if you go that route. Then try the above adjustment exercises.
This way you will recoup some usefulness, and it won't be $425 out the window.
