Just a few days before Thanksgiving in 2001, we found out our normal, healthy 9 year old middle son had a terminal illness. A neuro-muscular disorder that would eventually rob him of almost every physical skill and also reduce his life expectancy to his early 20's. He is 23 and has been in a wheelchair since he was 12. He is doing well, has a team of doctors that monitor and treat his many symptoms on a yearly basis but no cure in sight.
It has been difficult to watch an active, seemingly healthy boy who other than having mild clumsiness seemed completely normal; reduced to a wheelchair. No longer even able to even play video games due to fatigue in his hands. He has a positive outlook and continues to try to do more than his body will allow him every day. He works as an office assistant about 15 hrs a week and enjoys movies, TV and making people laugh. He went through some dark times, he was not alone as I was with him but we pulled through, his mom is so much stronger than me on this type of thing.
He requires a great deal of care and needs help for most everyday tasks. He is very smart and memorizes football and baseball stats to the point it is unbelievable, not just current players but even players from decades before he was born. He would have given anything for his chance on the field.
