I think the show was an accidental success. It had tons of potential, but they didn't make use of it. Each episode could take place anywhere, feature characters that aren't recurring, and it left an easy way to write characters in/out of the story. It could travel in time, it could feature historical characters, in short...with better writing it could have been a variation of Doctor Who, but they missed the boat. Quite a shame really.
