the row of butterfly tabs on the bottom were used to hold screens in here for the Summer.
the square cut nail were used to hold old windows on hinges back against the frame instead of sash locks here. Driven in about one third of the way so they could be pulled out and pushed back in by hand. See the rust likely from the damper wood.
Sash locks were for windows that got opened a lot. Usually just upstairs, although it may have been convenient for the window that got opened to fill a coal bin in the basement might have a sash lock.
