to be fair, an iPhone 4S is still a good smart phone.
battery replacement is reasonably cheap.
swappa.com has them in EX condition for $200, and some are 32 GB, which is nice.
iPhone 5 on swappa run around $300, again some are 32 GB.
those are ATT variations, didn't check other carriers.
to answer your question, if bottom line cost is Very Important™ then a 3 year old iPhone (the 4s) or 2 year old (the 5) isn't a bad choice.
