Yes, he was wrong. Pocketability doesn't imply optimum usability, and most standard pants/jeans pockets—at least Levis—will still easily accommodate a 5 inch phone. The older 4 inch size might be useful for one-handed operation, but that may be overrated; most people (that I see) use their iPhone two-handed. You can't type and securely grip the phone, otherwise.
The 7 inch tablet quote that decay posted is high irony, considering the iPod Touch was a mere 3.5 inches, and nobody had to sharpen their fingers to use it.
