It also works in conjunction with Bluetooth LE. You have to be in certain proximity, it just doesn't work if devices are on the same wireless network.
For example, if you are on a large wireless network, say at a School or a Business, and your computer (or other iOS devices) is in an office or room on the other side of the building or campus, than where you physically are, if your phone rings in your pocket, your computer/devices won't also ring because it knows you are not close by.
