It's easier with iPads because they're data-only, and their sales aren't based on the telco subsidy/contract model. It provides some clues as to what a more freely-competitive mobile services market might resemble, but old habits and business models die hard.
The Verizon will-she or won't-she has been covered before. Just remember there is a corporate policy aspect, not just a technical aspect. If one wants to stray from the commonly tread paths, it's important to note, and heed the information that's provided by those who have already traversed them.
