Why is Google encrypting searches?

Seriously, I thought the reason for this encryption was to protect google's results?

I'm not worried about google's security. They are protected by their business model (if they leak too much, they are dead).

But I AM worried about agencies with other agendas getting a hold of material from families of our military, etc.
