It wasn't a complete expectation, just wanting a clarification. The hardware has changed a lot in recent years in several small ways and Apple has introduced a lot of stuff that just isn't always back-compatible. Among Mac Pros only the current "trash can" model supports the SMS and Handoff stuff, and it's their most expensive machine.
That update-to-Yosemite page lists a lot of stuff intended for "it just works" stuff among things that go way beyond the printers and SCSI world of the Old Apple computer.
AirDrop in particular is an odd duck because it requires more than just WiFi and the right OS. It needs wireless hardware that supports the ad hoc network creation, which is a recent thing. Adding iPhone interoperability is a further wrinkle for whatever reason.
