Sure, the iPod touch 5th generation is cheaper but also considerably slower than the new one. Also, the camera on the new one is a huge improvement over the one in the 5th generation iPod.
Oh, I thought in comparison to the iPhone 5. There's no way I would buy the old touch. It's a dog.

In all seriousness, I have a decent LG Android phone that was $50. System software is now up to Lollipop after two updates from LG/T-Mobile. Who would have thought support would span for an entire year? Camera isn't nearly as good as this new touch, slower processor, less pixel dense screen, but it is an actual phone, has removable battery, and microSD. Pretty nice for $50 compared to $199. For music and basic app use, the new touch isn't much of an improvement. Solely because that use isn't being bottlenecked by processor and GPU. For gaming, the new touch is a huge step up.
