We've ALWAYS used our number and never had an issue.
Under Send and Receive, there's nothing there now. B/c I'm not signed in with my Apple ID. If I sign in, it shows my Apple ID, my daughter's, my phone number and the new UK phone number. But my phone number is greyed out and not selectable.
