Well. My phone mysteriously works now. I did nothing. They did nothing. WTF.
That has been my experience with iMessage. It will suddenly stop working and nothing will fix it, then a few hours later it is back just the way it was. Weird.
It seems that whenever a change is made, there is a server update lag or something. I have no idea what, but it just takes a while to right itself. I have had it act similarly weird for me, but not with the exact same situation as yours.
Glad it is working again, as I am sure your wife, and you, have a lot on your minds and futzing with a phone is not something you want to be doing.
I prayed: "Lord, please fix bazookaman and his people's iPhone difficulties. Also, fatten up his bank account a bit, in your name I pray, amen." Now it works.
Hmmm...maybe you should have led with the whole "fat bank account" thing.
