Is this because of my Apple router?
#1
I wanted to move some video - a DVD rip of 4.54 GB - from my iMac to my MBP.

The iMac is hooked up via ethernet to a gigabit switch, and the laptop was connecting via wireless.

It took 20 minutes to the transfer. I could have done this far more quickly via a thumb drive connected to the USB 2 port on the iMac. Crazy!

Is this somehow because of the Airport Express? I get very fast downloads via wireless from the internet.

If this is normal, should I get a thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter for these kinds of transfers? This should of course get the router out of the picture.
