Despite the success of Walmart, retail is a chancy business. In this area alone the road is littered with the corpses of (what used to be called) 'one-floor department stores': Zayres, Kings, Ames, Bradlees, and others I've doubtless forgotten. Not to mention supermarkets: A&P, Purity Supreme, Star Market, etc., etc.

These are perilous economic times. I've read that Target is closing stores, too, and Sears is hanging on by a thread.
