3d,
Exactly. The Onkyo HT-S780 was a solid home theater system in a box for its time. One of the better ones, actually. But, at least 2/3 of the $500.00 list price was for the receiver. I've no doubt one of the center channel speakers I linked in my original post would be a huge improvement over the Onkyo center.
The other thing to keep in mind is that neither I nor my parents are audiophiles. I can notice the difference between using a Cambridge Soundworks Newton C55 speaker and the original Onkyo center as a center. No doubt about it. The Onkyo is a huge improvement. 'course, the Newton speaker isn't intended to be a center. It's supposed to be a small left, right or surround sound speaker. SO, it doesn't come as a surprise that the difference is noticeable.
But, being that I'm not an audiophile, I'm betting a mismatched center and front right and front left speakers wouldn't matter to my ears. I'd be happy as long as it sounds good. This is why I'm keeping the Onkyo center for myself for now and grabbed the Monoprice center for my parents. Eventually, I'll replace all of the speakers and give my parents the complete Onkyo system.
A bigger concern right now is ensuring the home theater system and the rest of my home is babyproofed. Baby M is going to start to crawl soon. That means, little fingers are going to get everywhere.
