Yikes. However, dochocson is right in that I'm pretty fine while walking. And it doesn't sound like lumbar spinal stenosis either, based on the info I found which states that: Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis are typically comfortable at rest but cannot walk far without developing leg pain. Pain relief is achieved, sometimes almost immediately, when they sit down again.
Methinks Speedy may be on the right track with "old(er) age". My concern is whether I'm more likely to aggravate it by continuing the stairs. Maybe I'll lay off the stairs for a week or so and see if things improve. That might tell me something in and of itself. Meanwhile, I'll have a banana...and maybe some Aleve®.
