You're making the all-too-often-wrong assumption that you do see all the critical elements (traffic and pedestrian) around you.
Cemeteries a full of people who either shared your misconception, or had the misfortune of encountering them.
Then we have those who faithfully signal and do follow on their stated intentions.
Those who believe that by turning on the left or the the right turn signal they can change the lane appropriately, even though that space is occupied by somebody else.
"I signaled", ie I am entitled.
I would rather they did not signal and only changed lanes when that space was available...
