Anecdotally, the OEM 7200RPM drive in the old MBP got pretty warm, whereas the 750GB 5400RPM pull from the newer MBP never got nearly as warm in its original MBP, so I hoped it would be a safe choice for the optical bay. Until the current heat wave, the setup was fine, but as noted, when the ambient temps in the room get to a certain level, it's like the MBP flips its 'hot' switch. When you confirm, "The MBP is not designed to deal with the heat from a HD in that bay." That's pretty much what I was asking "why" about. Thanks.
