In winter, they're probably burning 3000 calories a day to just not-freeze-to-death... Then, they got better insulation in their homes, and now they still eat 3000 calories a day.
Kinda like we used to eat big "farm breakfasts", but then quit working in the fields dawn to dusk... and kept eating the big farm breakfasts, and got fat.
