Possible to connect Macbook Pro and Mac mini to single monitor?

Hi,

Is it possible to connect a Macbook Pro via miniDisplayPort to a monitor and a Mac mini via HDMI to the same monitor?

I know it's physically possible, ie, just plug them both in the way I described above, but will they both work? How would you switch from one to the other?

I guess monitors that support PIP could do this, right? But what about monitors that don't support PIP?
