Usually the balance staff is broken. On the Elgin Thin Thin models, there are usually 1 of 3 parts that are broken--the rocker plate, setting lever, and setting lever spring.
Also, the openings on the hands become bent out of shape over time if they have been removed and put back on. They start to slip.
