To discover it, you'd have to fill up the image and then try to copy data from the portion that wasn't written properly.
If you've got a scheduled backup going and don't do periodic spot-checks or checksum-backups then it might never be noticed until you need the data for disaster-recovery. Insidious and more than a little horrifying.
