I do this all the time. Via Carbon Copy Cloner, backing up to a sparse disk image creates what can be made into a bootable disk if copied to a physical disk. I use sparse disk images on large drives where I want to back up a bunch of different stuff to the large drive. Then if I have a computer with hard drive which goes bad I have the option to either restore from the sparse disk image, or copy the sparse disk image to another physical drive which I can use as a boot drive.

And I think sparse disk or sparse bundle is the format Time Machine uses on Time Capsules.

As Sarcany said, not having this work properly is "more than a little horrifying".
