One of the things he mentioned in passing was how much stronger (and closer to the Constitution) southern states were after the Civil War, for a time. Seeing the possibility of Espy reminded me of that.
The author had asked a classroom of mostly black students about what Reconstruction was, and they responded that Blacks had been put in power but had screwed it up, so whites were soon in control again. This is what they were taught.

Thanks for that. It's incredible what teaching made-up history can do.
The movement to remove confederate statues has helped a lot of people learn what actually went on in Reconstruction and early 20th century.
