"An open letter to my white MAGA-voting uncles on the occasion of my Italian-born great aunt’s funeral"
#3
Yes.
If the current immigrant waves were coming from Western Europe, we would not be having these conversations, would we ?

My inlaws escaped from Russian concentration camps in the 1940's. NOT "Summer camps".

When they were put into the camps, my mother in law was 11. My father in law was 13. They were separated from their parents (My father in law's father was murdered in front of his family because he objected to the rape of his wife and daughters). They were given minimal food and forced to do hard labor. Beaten, tortured, raped. Many of their friends died over the cold winters and hot summers in Yugoslavia, from illness, exposure, starvation, abuse, or being straight out shot by drunken guards looking for 'thrills'.

They survived. They escaped. They brought their family members out. They walked through central Europe to Austria, to the American Zone. They entered refugee camps there. They worked hard. They eventually were sponsored by a local church here in Ohio for permission to emigrate. They took a ship over. landed in New York, and came by train to Ohio.

Every one of us fortunate enough to be born American Citizens should learn the stories of those who escaped death and torment to come here and build new lives. Why should we deny others that opportunity ?
