Methylmercury is accumulated in the tissues, and so when you eat the fish, you are consuming the methylmercury as well. The exact location of mercury in aquatic systems, however, is (the last time I checked) somewhat debated as mercury in the environment is low, but the fish are getting it from somewhere.
From what I've read mercury concentrations are highest in apex predator fish, so it's not unreasonable to assume bottom feeders pick it up from the silt and then it works it's way up the food chain from there.
There is a not bad* "eco-horror" movie from 1980 called Prophecy that centers around mercury poisoning in the environment. It's worth a watch** and the whole thing is available on YouTube in it's entirety-

*Better-than-average period effects, a reasonably plausible and involving story line, and genuine name-brand actors.
**It does have a violent moment or two, but not too much actual gore. It is also unintentionally funny in places as well.
